Adding an area rug to your bedroom gives the room an instant make-over for minimal effort and an affordable price. Area rugs also provide a soft place to land – literally giving you a comfortable cover on a hardwood or tile bedroom floor. There’s really no question that adding an area rug to your bedroom is a great idea. There are, however, lots of questions about the best way to do that. Placing an area rug can be tricky but it doesn’t have to be.
Why choose an area rug for your bedroom?
Area rugs may be the most versatile flooring product available. You can use an area rug to change the character of a room; to define a space; to add a touch of softness and sound absorption or to deliver a colorful finishing touch.
- There is a color, style and type of area rug for every lifestyle and budget.
- Area rugs can be installed on top of hardwood, tile or even wall-to-wall carpet.
- Area rugs are beautiful works of art and enhance your bedroom while also adding comfort.
How to place an area rug in your bedroom
The general rule of thumb for an area rug is to measure the room and subtract 2-3 feet from each side to find the best size area rug for your room. This can sometimes be tricky in a bedroom where a bed may cover most of a large area rug thus diminishing it’s overall design influence on the room. If you want to place a rug under your bed, measure it so that the rug extends 2-3 feet on each side of the bed. If your bed takes up so much space in the room that you don’t have 2-3 feet on each side, make sure the rug extends 2-3 feet from the end of the bed or consider using smaller rugs.
Small rugs can act as runners along each side and foot of the bed. Placing area rugs around the bed gives you all the design impact you want and puts the comfort under your feet when you get into and out of bed. Added bonus: using smaller rugs gives you the beautiful design on your floor at a lower cost than a large rug.
