Carpet has always been the top flooring for Indianapolis homeowners. It’s affordable, comfortable and stylish. It’s a natural insulator and helps quiet a room. There’s a lot to like when it comes to carpet. Like most people, you want to take care of the investment you’ve made in your flooring. It’s not the sort of thing you change every other year. There are a few things you can do regularly to help maintain your carpet and one big thing you should do probably more often than you think.
Regular carpet cleaning tips
The best thing you can do for your carpet? Vacuum it at least once a week – twice a week if it’s in a busy room or high traffic area. Dirt and debris are flooring’s worst enemy so the more you can do to remove them, the longer your carpet will last. Ask people to take off their shoes before walking on the carpet. Install good door mats to help catch some of that dirt before it even enters your house. And vacuum often to take care of the rest.
The second best thing you can do for your carpet is keep a clean white towel handy. When spills happen – and they always do – the faster you can blot up the spill the better your chances of not having a stained carpet. Learn a few other tips and tricks in our carpet care video:
How often should you deep clean your carpet?
This is the carpet cleaning tip that surprises many people. The answer? Every year.
To keep your carpet looking its best you should have it professionally cleaned once a year. If you have children and/or pets you will need to have your carpet deep-cleaned 3-4 times a year. Deep-down dirt – the kind that settles to the base of your carpet fibers, even if you faithfully vacuum – can cause your carpet to break-down prematurely, shortening its lifespan. Professional deep cleaning takes care of that deep down dirt before it become a long term problem.
