Four keys to shopping for tile

Published: September 12, 2013

Tile is a popular flooring choice in many Central Indiana homes. From Avon to Zionsville, you’ll find tile in many kitchens, bathrooms and entry ways. Tile is a functional choice – easy to clean and maintain. It’s also a beautiful choice with its many materials and color options. Tile as a flooring or backsplash choice is becoming more and more popular with Indianapolis homeowners.

As with many facets of home design, shopping for tile can seem overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. Here at Kermans we want you to feel comfortable shopping for any type of flooring from asking questions to taking home samples. In that spirit we’ve compiled this list for you:

Four Keys to Shopping for Tile

1. Select the right material. When people think of tile, they often think of ceramic tile. Tile isn’t that limited! Glass, stone, marble, metal, terrazo… the list goes on and on. Each type of tile brings features and benefits to your home. They also bring a different set of color and shading to your decor. Come prepared to talk about the room where you will use the tile so our in-house design staff can recommend the best material for your lifestyle. Learn more about tile materials.

2. Ask about shading. Many styles of tile are designed to look and feel like natural stone. That means they often contain a textured surface and color variations. Even if you select solid color tiles, you will still see shade variation from tile to tile. Each tile manufacturer will label the sample telling you how much variation to expect overall – codes range from minimal variation (Uniform Appearance) to wide variation with different colors on different tiles (Random Variation).

3. Be a little bold. Whether you’re thinking of future resale or worried you might get tired of a color or pattern, don’t shy away from them with tile. It’s easy to go with a neutral floor or backsplash that includes colorful tiles interspersed in a design. Talk to our designers about incorporating a tasteful touch of color in your tile.

4. Don’t forget the trim. Each tile has its own color and texture but you can customize your particular room with accent pieces such as trim work and decorative tiles. Kermans’ design consultants can then help you create a layout pattern, including trim, decorative patterns, grout color and grout sealer. Pulling these details together will make for a better fit in your home.
