Choosing a color palette for your room
Published: May 4, 2017
Whether you are designing a newly built room or renovating your home, choosing colors are an important part of the process. Colors can dictate the feel of a room and create a space that feels bright and energetic or calming and soothing. When it comes time to choose the color palette for your room, don’t ignore the floor. As the foundation of your room, your choice in floor colors will play a large role in the look and feel of the space.
Looking for bold, bright colors: look at carpet
Carpet comes in every shade under the rainbow so you can certainly set the style with any color ranging from pastel blue to rich burgundy. However, one area where carpet really shines is in bold, bright colors. You just can’t get a colorful statement from tile or hardwood in the same way. Carpet styles lend themselves to so many creative patterns, shades and styles that the sky is the limit.
- 2017 color trends in wall paint trend towards calming colors – shades of gray, some with a touch of violet or blue. Walls in these colors are a perfect match for rich, deep carpet colors or fun, bright patterns.
- Pantone’s color of the year is Greenery. To quote Pantone “Greenery is nature’s neutral. Greenery evokes the first days of spring when anture’s greens revive, restore and renew.” Following the design rule of thumb to place darker colors in the floor and lighten them as you move up the room, greenery on the walls or as an accent would pair beautifully with a dark, bold carpet.
- New neutrals are also a trend for home colors in 2017. Think gray instead of beige. Or cinnamon in place of dark brown. These new neutrals make beautiful floors that let your personality shine through.
Flooring as inspiration
Have a beautiful area rug that will be a focal point of the room? Fall in love with a patterned carpet? Let that be the inspiration for the color palette of the room. Pick the accent and neutral colors out of the rug and let those dictate the wall paint color, the furnishings and accent pieces.
