7 questions to consider when buying an area rug
Published: November 28, 2017
Do you have a room that you don’t know what to do with? Have you thought about an area rug? They work with any type of flooring and are especially great paired with hardwood floors. The right one can tie a room together through texture, design, and color.
Area rugs are a perfect marriage of function, comfort, and style. They protect you from slipping and protect your floors from scratches and scuffs. Also, when used in most rooms, area rugs will provide comfort by absorbing unwanted noise in a room and providing a soft feel underfoot when walking. They add style, too.
How to pick the right area rug
Beyond placement, there are a myriad of considerations to keep in mind when looking for a new area rug. From style, color, and design, to size, shape, and padding, there are a lot of variables to consider and finding an answer often leads to other questions, but don’t be intimidated.
Instead, concentrate on these questions:
- Does an area rug work in the style of room where you plan to use it?
- What size and shape of area rug would best accentuate the space?
- Will any large furniture obscure the area rug?
- How spacious is the room?
- What is the expected level of foot traffic in the room?
- Does the area rug need to feel soft underfoot?
- Is the room too dark for a patterned rug?
Choose the right size
Once you have found the perfect area rug, there are several things to keep in mind when thinking about placement, but the most important is size. It is absolutely critical. A small area rug in a large space will look out of place. Alternatively, an area rug that is too large won’t frame your floor properly.
